🦾 Inbolt pioneers botnation
The past few years have really seen a shift from motion-based to mission-based in robotics, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We're exploring that and more, biweekly in botnation.
Inbolt was founded three years ago by myself and my co-founders, Louis and Albane. We identified a gap in the manufacturing industry: the lack of real-time information from shop floors. Despite the use of industrial software such as manufacturing execution systems and off-line robot programming software, there is often a disconnect between these systems and the reality of the manufacturing environment. For example, unless a workpiece is fully constrained, any position deviation is not detected by the robot, causing it to complete its mission in the incorrect location.
This happens more frequently than we realize.
We set out to solve this problem and developed a hardware agnostic 3D model-based tracking technology.
Through our work, we also observed that manufacturers often face challenges in making decisions about automation, due to the complexity and cost of the automation industry ecosystem.
The automation industry is so diverse, the ecosystem so tedious to understand and master, the outright cost so high. It’s no wonder people get overwhelmed and postpone any decision making for automation until they’re completely cornered.
Our goal is to change this dynamic and make the process of automating industry processes more accessible and straightforward.
I hope to do so through this newsletter and our continued work in the field.
What to expect from me
Botnation is my love-letter to the industry, a place to discuss interesting finds and relevant news regarding the automation, robotics and AI industry.
My goal is to observe the ecosystem in which Inbolt and, more broadly speaking, robot automation, evolves in. It’s no small feat, as its evolution is constant and fast as a rocket.
However, it’s also what makes it an exciting world full of challenges and opportunities.
Let’s dive in with this week’s interesting news.
Robotics News Roundup
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) released a study that describes challenges of adopting and using industrial robotics. Everyone seems to agree that the lack of standardisation doesn’t do robotics any favours. They’re calling for more harmonisation and uniformity.
Do you remember when Facebook faced a large exodus from people monitoring offensive content? AI moderators are facing the same problem. AI consumes any and all information it is fed. It is the monitors’ jobs to analyse data that may contain Extremely Toxic Content™ and remove it from its feed. People aren’t doing well.
Generative AI models have populated Internet— chatGPT, Playground AI, Dall E 2… and it’s raising a lot of questions, notably since some can train themselves to learn more.
